Generation to Generation

A High School Composer Mentoring Program

The Guild of Temple Musicians (GTM), in conjunction with the American Conference of Cantors (ACC), is also proud to offer the Generation to Generation Prize to a talented high school student who demonstrates promise in creating melodies that show sensitivity to the setting of Jewish liturgical text. The winner will be paired with an experienced composer of Jewish liturgical music to refine and expand his/her understanding of melody, text-setting and compositional techniques, with the goal of inspiring the next generation of Jewish composers.

Award Criteria:

  • Composition must be original and a previously unpublished work set to a liturgical text in Hebrew chosen from the options below.
  • Submissions must be in the form of notated music containing a melody and Hebrew text in transliteration. The music may be printed legibly by hand (or computer generated) and may be written with (or without) chord symbols. It must be notated by the composer.
  • Submissions must be accompanied by a letter of support from a Jewish professional who knows the candidate well (rabbi, cantor, educator in your synagogue or composer in your community). The professional is to verify the validity and originality of the student’s work and give a brief summary of the student’s qualifications. This professional may also provide feedback during the composition process, but he or she is not to assist in the actual work of composing.
  • DEADLINE: All submissions must be postmarked no later than December 11, 2009. The winning composition and composer will be announced in March 2010. The winning composer will be invited to attend the annual convention of the ACC & GTM (summer of 2010 in Memphis, TN).
  • Submissions are to be e-mailed (scans in PDF format) or sent (written manuscripts) to:
OR Dr. Jayson Rodovsky, URJ Books & Music, 633 Third Avenue (7th Floor), New York, NY 10017
